The Clarification of All-Wheel Drive and Four-Wheel Drive

Sometimes meanings of a word take on a different character, which then needs further explanation to decipher the true meaning. Many people feel that the meaning of the terms "All-Wheel-Drive" and "Four-Wheel-Drive" are one and the same, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Even though both systems allow for a workable four-wheel power system to create more road traction, that is where any similar principles end. They are designed for different purposes and processes.

Four-wheel-drive systems have been viable for quite a few years thus many people are familiar with the concept. The system utilizes a split differential and a lower gear ratio setting to accomplish its function. Pickup trucks and larger off-road SUVs are the primary types of vehicles that use this system. These vehicles are used mainly for off-road and rugged terrain driving.

The all-wheel-drive units consist of crossovers, sedans, and high-performance vehicles. A steady supply of power is supplied to each wheel so a powerful and steady ride is created on paved surfaces, which the system was created upon which to drive.
